Biography
Hailing from Chilliwack BC, Canadian trombonist Jackson Howard is one of the country’s top rising classical musicians. He is an active solo, chamber and orchestral performer, working with top artists and organizations across North America.
Jackson has been an extra musician with many major orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Toronto and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras, and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. He has won prizes from major competitions, including the Jeju International Brass Competition (2025) and the OSM Competition (2024). As a solo and chamber musician, Jackson has performed in venues such as Tanna Schulich Hall, Field Concert Hall, Roy Barnett Recital Hall, and Mazzoleni Hall. He has performed concertos with the Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, the PRISMA Festival Orchestra, the Fraser Valley Symphony, the Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Jackson has been a part of numerous commissioning projects for trombone, including with composers such as Sterling Maffe, Kevin Lao, Brooklyn Wood and Issac Creager. Regularly, his recital programs feature works of living composers, as he believes that new repertoire is vital to the growth and development of the trombone. He is a graduate student of the Curtis Institute of Music, with his major teachers being Matthew Vaughn and Nitzan Haroz. Jackson holds a Bachelors of Music from the Glenn Gould School of Music, where he studied with Gordon Wolfe. Previous mentors include Brian Wendel, Gordon Cherry, and Ellen Marple.
